Whole Foods Interactive Retail Display

8' x 2.5' x 2' : pilot store installation. Oil painted baltic birch, polycarbonate, steel, brass, and unicorn tears. It's goal is to illustrate responsible farming practices through an interactive farm landscape.

Levers at the bottom make each of seven sections of the landscape rise up from behind the hills, and animate one important aspect of responsible farming practices in wooden pieces.

Heineken Brewlock Experiential Marketing Pop-up & Mini Bar

Stainless steel, Acrylic, old barnwood and Laminate. This mini bar with themed back wall were part of a custom build for Heineken at Xylem Design. I built the CAD model to exact specifications to show to the client and then turned it into shop drawings for CNC and the production floor. I also lasercut the lettering myself, and helped to build and detail the entire set.

This piece was designed to be taken down and set back up easily at outdoor events like music concerts and beer festivals. I did the CAD work here, and the CNC cutting and some of the detailing work after helping to build it.

This piece is the second iteration of the radial zen garden, but is a fundamentally more manual experience. It turned out to function much like a giant radial "Etch-a-sketch" might. The user turns the table top with one hand in either direction, and turns the radius crank wheel with the other, creating a path with the moving steel ball. This contraption may be the perfect mandala maker.

Slow, meditative clockwise movement with a light grinding hum - that is the sound of this garden lulling viewers into fascination and discovery. Variously sized steel balls can be placed in the sand, and when the motor is turned on they spring to life carving concentric rings. Stainless steel, flexible wood, fine white sand. Currently building version 3!

This new version has CNC cut pieces, and a more savvy furniture feel with sound-dampening lid that blends seamlessly into the side walls.

3.5’x3’x.75.” Cherry, mahogany, bass wood.

This piece was a commission for a downtown office building in Boulder, CO. It entwines two different mazes that can be worked with one’s eyes.

This is a handmade hairpin using my favorite African hardwood padauk, and an african sea sediment jasper oval bead secured with a brass pin.

Pine, Brass Clock Gears
This piece started as a single 2x4 pine plank.

These were designed in CAD, and then built by hand.

I worked quite a bit on this piece as an apprentice to a master furniture maker.

This piece was a commission for a quad stilt walker to have a new ethereal beast to pilot for Halloween in downtown Boulder, CO, and at special events. It measures roughly 10” tall, and is made of spray insulation foam, wire frame, cardboard, and an LED lighting system, along with foot stilts and crutches for the arms. The lights are remote controllable. Scroll down to watch the video and see him in action!

Designed as part of a “physical social media network” at the Goat Farm Arts Center in Atlanta, this box was part of a system that setup meetings between artists and community to share resources. This secret box hidden in plain sight contained a stamp pad where community members would meet, use the “secret knock” to get in, and then open the box and use their unique object with RFID-chipped stamp on the pad to show they met together. Their RFIDs would then be recorded in the back-end system and tracked to check for effectiveness and update connections in realtime on the web interface. Contains Arduino board and originally used Rasperry pi.

This piece was a nifty prototype invention of mine to help promote the quality products of Xylem Design in Fort Collins, CO. We CNC etched the company logo into the top panel, and then left it as a gift after our sales pitch. Click on the image to watch the video!

This piece is a 3-stage touch lamp with a framework of cast iron copies of grandfather clock movement gears, and a cast iron copy of my great grandfather’s welding goggles. The face is carved from cherry and white oak, and is designed to be reminiscent of the chess and checkerboards that I learned how to use at my grandparents’ and great grandparents’ houses.

This set of enchanted mushrooms were designed as part of a modular set for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They are wirelessly controllable, and are made out of hot melt adhesive (hot glue!) and a small amount of fiber optic strands as grass.

A helpful angle on this piece…

Cast iron, glass, steel, brass, marble.

If one walks up, puts their face up to this reflective face, and looks through the eye with their eye, they will see another face on a tiny coin. That's right... it's a recursive loop! Turns out that consciousness is made of the stuff! There are also related themes present in this work such as biological components as mechanisms of self, and internal vs. external structure. The concept was Inspired by my favorite book: Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid.

Sterling Silver, Nickel, Copper, Brass, Spring Steel

This ring, when worn and depressed on a surface, has a face (Pompey's signet) that raises and flips over to display the second face which celebrates Cleopatra's new reign over Egypt.

The story behind the ring: Caesar and Pompey had their final showdown at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. The fighting was bitter for both sides but eventually was a decisive victory for Caesar. Like all the other conservatives, Pompey had to run for his life. He met his wife Cornelia and his son Sextus Pompeius on the island of Mytilene. He then wondered where to go next. The decision of running to one of the eastern kingdoms was overruled in favor of Egypt.After his arrival in Egypt, Pompey's fate was decided by the counselors of the young king Ptolemy XIII. While Pompey waited offshore for word, they argued the cost of offering him refuge with Caesar already en route for Egypt. It was decided to murder Caesar's enemy to ingratiate themselves with him. On September 29, his 58th birthday, the great Pompey was lured toward a supposed audience on shore in a small boat in which he recognized two old comrades-in-arms, Achillas and Lucius Septimius. They were to be his assassins. While he sat in the boat, studying his speech for the king, they stabbed him in the back with sword and dagger. After decapitation, the body was left, contemptuously unattended and naked, on the shore. His freedman, Philipus, organized a simple funeral pyre and cremated the body on a pyre of broken ship's timbers.Caesar arrived a short time afterwards. As a welcoming present he received Pompey's head and ring in a basket. However, he was not pleased in seeing his rival, a consul of Rome and once his ally and son-in-law, murdered by traitors. When a slave offered him Pompey's head, "he turned away from him with loathing, as from an assassin; and when he received Pompey's signet ring on which was engraved a lion holding a sword in his paws, he burst into tears" (Plutarch, Life of Pompey 80). He deposed Ptolemy XIII, executed his regent Pothinus, and elevated Ptolemy's sister Cleopatra VII to the throne of Egypt. Caesar gave Pompey's ashes and ring to Cornelia, who took them back to her estates in Italy.

These 18k gold rings were made as a commission as "his and hers" pieces to commemorate a family (monogram) and their family business (logo seal). They feature either side the wearer would like, as the signets flip. They also would work as real wax-seal signets.

These rings began with the goal of translating bodily movements into kinetic movement in a piece of jewelry. If the gear around the ring is turned or rolled on a surface, the two gears on top of the ring rotate in opposing directions. The first version was hand fabricated from brass grandfather clock movement gears, sterling silver, copper, and tigerseye.

The second version was modeled in CAD, 3D printed in wax, and then lost wax cast in bronze and riveted together.
